- Q - What educational requirements do you have for new hires?
A - We believe so highly in our training programs, you don’t have to have a college degree to start a career with us. Most participants in our Management Development Program find it useful to have a bachelor’s degree, saying that it helped them be able to accelerate through the career path faster than if they did not have one.
- Q - When do you start hiring for internship positions?
A - We are always looking for individuals to participate in our Internship Program, but most group markets start the formal interview process during the Spring semester
- Q - What is the environment like as a Steak n Shake Manager?
A - As a Steak n Shake Manager, you are empowered to create your own environment within your restaurant. It is often said that our best restaurants are lead by individuals who know the impact a fun work environment has on Associates. Providing our guests with the best possible customer service becomes easy if you are having fun.
- Q - Will I have to work nights and weekends?
A - One of the most unique features of Steak n Shake is the ability to provide our guests with round-the-clock access to us. Most of our restaurants’ late night business accounts for 12% of their total sales. We believe that because we are part of the niche business that is 24-hour service, we can provide our Associates with the flexibility sometimes needed to balance work and life obligations by remaining open 24 hours.
- Q - How many hours a week will I have to work?
A - Most Steak n Shake Managers will work 50 hours a week. This ensures that the entire Management staff is able to enjoy a healthy work-life balance.
- Q - Why would I want to be a Steak n Shake Manager and flip Steakburgers after I spent all this time in college?
A - Being a Steak n Shake Manager is not just about the great food we serve. The average Steak n Shake does $2 Million in sales each year, has 50-70 Associates and sees about 245,000 guests come in the door over the course of twelve months. All those things added together make for an environment ripe for development. You not only get to coach people through good service, you also get to develop your people by hiring and challenging your staff. Participation in marketing is almost inevitable as you can use our local store marketing programs to reach out to schools and business in the area of your restaurant—and all those numbers classes you took in college? They can be used when you analyze your store results and find ways to improve them. Being a Steak n Shake Manager is more than just flipping Steakburgers: it is a real business with real opportunity.
- Q - What are your growth plans?
A - The growth plans of the company are strong. We have a foundation of restaurants clustered in geographic areas that can now support the growth markets we are moving into. Those markets include areas like Texas, Florida and Chicago. In Fiscal Year 2006, we opened 26 restaurants and our growth plans include a continued pattern of the same.
- Q - Does everyone start as a Manager in Training?
A - Steak n Shake has been around since 1934—that is 72 years of knowledge passed down from generation to generation. By entering into our Manager-in-Training program, you are given a place where you can learn those best practices so you can have a foundation on which to build your Steak n Shake career. Every Steak n Shake Manager starts as a Manager-in-Training. The rate at which you accelerate past that is up to you.
- Q - How can I get a job at the Corporate Office?
A - We hire less than 4% of all Associates into roles at our Corporate Offices each year and a significant amount of those hires come from our field operations. As a restaurant company, our main focus is in our operations, and therefore that is where most of our growth positions are. If restaurant operations is not an option for you, check out the open positions at the Corporate Office listed under the Apply Now tab of our website.
- Q - How do I find the closest Steak n Shake?
A - To find the Steak n Shake closest to you, click on our locations link.
